What is SMPS?

A switched-mode power supply (SMPS) is an electronic circuit that converts power using switching devices that are turned on and off at high frequencies, and storage components such as inductors or capacitors to supply power when the switching device is in its non-conduction state.

What is the purpose of SMPS?

An SMPS is a switched-mode power supply. It is used to convert an unregulated power input into a regulated power output, often altering the voltage. In a modern computer, several components may be powered from the same power supply but will often require different regulated voltages. The SMPS fulfils this role.

Color coding voltages for smps

Orange having 3.3 volt

Yellow having +12 volt
Red having +5 volt
Blue having -12 volt
Black having ground
Violet and gray having 5 volt (PWR_OK )(status signal generated by PSU to indicate voltages are OK)
Green 3 Volt is for power switch (it can be shorted to ground to start PSU)
Purple: 5V SB (standby voltage)
White: -5V (optional on newer ATX-2 PSUs)
